Bits, mud motors, dual-rod systems, hammers, reamers and fluids: choosing the right way to cut and keeping control of the bore.

Pilot bit for horizontal directional drilling in rock

Module preview

4 of 48 slides, as they appear in the module.

  • Slide 1 HDD tools in rock

  • Slide 10 A tool string, not just a bit

  • Slide 28 Fluids on site

  • Slide 40 Checklist: 10 questions before starting

Drilling in rock is not just a matter of picking a harder bit. This module presents the tool string for horizontal directional drilling in rock: cutting tools, drive systems, reamers, centralizers, entry casing, fluids and steering.

It explains how to describe the rock before choosing, how to compare pilot drilling systems, why cuttings removal is part of cutting and how to read the signs on site before pushing on, with diagrams, manufacturer examples and an exercise.

Objectives

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • Describe a rock mass with the right questions before choosing a tool
  • Explain the role of bits, motors, dual-rod systems, hammers and reamers
  • Compare pilot drilling systems in rock
  • Understand the role of fluids and cuttings removal
  • Recognize the signs that call for a reassessment

Outline
